In honor of International Lefthanders Day and our left-handed Business Operations Director, Kathy Popovich, we’re celebrating all the lefties out there!

Kathy credits the challenges of living as a lefty for enhancing her persistence, problem-solving skills, and resiliency. Here’s a glimpse into a day in the life of a lefty:

Scissors: Designed by righties for righties, Kathy remembers fighting for one of the few green-handled scissors in first grade. Since then, she’s mastered the art of awkwardly cutting paper with “regular” scissors.

Spiral Notebooks: As a writer, Kathy still battles the pesky spiral on a daily basis. Taking notes shouldn’t be such a hazard!

Smudged Handwriting: Kathy loves a fine-tipped gel pen, but the ink smudges that ruin her beautifully written sentences are a constant frustration.

Can Openers: Lefties know the struggle all too well. Whoever designed these must have had a personal vendetta against us. At least opening cans can be considered a full-body workout!

Musical Instruments: Whether it’s the guitar or flute, which Kathy attempted to learn in elementary school, she had to play everything upside down or backward. Nothing like being told, “do it like this, except with the other hand,” to stress a kid out.

Sports: Being a lefty athlete can actually be an advantage. Kathy enjoys hearing, “Oh, you’re a lefty,” after the game has started. But mastering skills as a lefty growing up was definitely a challenge.

Ironing: Did you know irons are designed with cords that make it difficult to iron with the left hand? Kathy has perfected the art of awkwardly flipping clothes—and occasionally ironing her own fingers.

Handshakes: Kathy gave up on shaking hands with her left hand years ago!

Here’s to all the lefties who’ve conquered a right-handed world with style—and maybe a few smudges, burns, and bruises along the way!
